I was really jealous of Josh Sattin's trellis, and I think he will be jealous of my fence. On top of that, mind is build with mostly free salvaged materials and you can build one too. Also, a living fence is great, but while that is maturing, you can build one of these. Materials needed Stalks (corn, sunflower, bamboo etc) Nails Pallet wood or 2x4s Pallet board Slabs or salvaged wood String (from hay bales; or twine from vines such as wisteria) Tools Hammer Saw Machete Shovel Tape measure Places to find free pallets Behind department stores such as Dick's Sporting goods Craigslist free section Facebook marketplace My garden area is 19 x 14 feet To build 3 sides, I used about 500 corn stalks (1/2 to 1 inch thick) For the 4th side, you may need an additional 150 stalks for a similar size garden Building and design ideas for different animal pressure Deer: Tall stalks in order to have a high fence; secure door well Rabbit: build low; make sure bottom board is perhaps buried a little, and also bottom board goes across the door way. Chickens: shallow trench to bury stalks on the inside of the wooden fence structure Dogs: bury bottom board a little; bury stalks on the outside of the wooden structure so they cannot push stalks easily Let me know of your thoughts. Any other ideas? Please share. I will also add to the description as needed.
