Where is the most moving situation that I can make a dance video!? Ha ha... yeah, right, NY subway! It always captivates me watching the dancers on the subway. Their supreme ease busting their moves in front of a group of strangers in such close proximity... with no escape! A perfect audience really. People are still(ish) while they allow the subway car to take over the movement of their busy lives. All that is required of them is to glance up from their phone long enough to be in awe of these trick. (although New Yorkers usually won't show it!) The dancers pull off tricks that are challenging on steady ground, let alone a hurtling subway with it's bumps and sudden swerves! For me, what is so magical about the dancers on NY subway, isn't even so much the physical feats but the ease and flow of the joy that the movement seems to effortlessly flow from. When they are in their grove... the groove takes them and the moves come from who they are. It's a expression of self, and a message of inspiration. So, as you can see, Emily and I went and introduced ourselves and busted our best moves with these dudes. It took me to new levels of experiencing... - How can I really let go of caring what anyone thinks? - Can I just let the groove me in each moment, being happy in my difference (ie there is no way I'm ever going to be able to dance like these guys) - There is a connection that is formed when you dance with someone that is way beyond words. It felt liberating and took me to a whole other reality. The world looks different. The subway car ceases to be a box for travel and becomes a play ground of adventure with all kinds of opportunities to propel yourself upside down. And it really challenged my vestibular apparatus to locate a new sense of stillness! And when we got home, both Emily and I felt like we were still spinning!
