Unfortunately we are often unable to immediately capture ideas as they appear in our minds. It would be the equivalent of having a VCR set to record in your brain, or being followed round like an Osbourne - when ever you had an idea you'd just scream it into camera. ^ the idea of actually putting either of the above ideas into practice is unreasonable, expensive and almost certainly hazardous to your health (mental & physical) However, when an idea reaches a certain stage it warrants 'jotting'. Jotting is the process where by you rush to get down as much of the bare bones as possible. Be it a slight of hand rhythm, an obscure melody, or simply the chords to what you hope will one day be a song - get it down fast. It only takes a minor distraction for these ideas to distort and become something that's simply... Not as good Whilst 'jotting' you may find your self repeating certain phrases, chord progressions/ lyrics etc. Don't worry ( I know. you weren't anyway.) This is important. It's muscle memory; both for your mind, and your fingers on whatever instrument you're playing. If you're repeating, generally it means your mind (you) thinks that it's good. Go with it.
